Letter of Introduction
Dear Host Family,
My name is Howard Dewey Hickman and I am sixteen years
old.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area of California in the
United States, I have lived here my entire life with my
father Howard,my mother Marcia, and my younger
thirteen-year-old sister Melinda.
While I have grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I
have developed a passion for learning, both for academics
and of other cultures. I have always loved to visit foreign
counties and learn about their culture. In the summer of
2000, my family and I took a trip to Europe, where we toured
the central European countries as well as the British Isles.
I enjoyed traveling in Europe so much that I plan to return
on a second trip with members of my school in the spring
of2004.
I am interested in visiting Japan for its unique culture.
I have visited
many foreign countries, but I know that Japan has a
culture and history unique and independent from the rest of
the world. In my youth, I wish to travel the world and
experience its cultures before I am unable to.
I am currently enrolled at Bentley High School where I am
active in the dramatic arts and challenged daily by the
rigorous classes and excellent teachers. I enjoy acting in
school plays and watching professional productions,
especially if the play contains hidden philosophical
meanings.
I enjoy listening to instrumental music, as well as
playing the Saxophone or Piano to relax. In my free time I
enjoy discussing philosophy and psychology with my friends.
I also enjoy playing strategy games with my friends. I have
a keen interest in chess, and I play a game ofShogi whenever
I can find an opponent.

私はサンフランシスコ湾エリアで学んでおりますが、外国文化に興味を持ち、外国を訪れてそれらの文化について知ることが好きです。2000年の夏には、家族で、イギリス諸島と中央のヨーロッパ諸国へ旅行をしました。また、今年の春にも、私の学校のメンバーと自分達で計画、ヨーロッパ旅行を楽しみました。今回の訪日に際しても、日本のユニークな文化に大変興味を持っています。私は多くの外国を訪れましたが、特に日本は世界の中でもユニークで独立している文化および歴史を持っていることを知っています。私は若いうちに世界中を旅行し、より多くの国の文化を経験したいと思っています。
私は、現在ベントリー高校において毎日の優れた教師と級友に恵まれ演劇芸術の勉強をしております。特に学校劇の中の演技で哲学的な意味を含んでいるものが好きです。
私はサクソフォンとピアノを演奏しますが、音楽演奏を聞くことも好きです。私は友達と哲学と心理学について議論することも好きです。また、友達と戦略ゲームをよくします。特にチェスにとても興味を持っております。また、相手を見つけることができる場合には、将棋もします。
